Broussard's in 2001 on Main Street. The restaurant moved to 5th Street in the Fall of 2008. Now a second generation restaurant, Chef Elizabeth Broussard Rogers is the head chef. Mary still hosts guests in our dining room while her daughter Beth continues to serve her father's culinary traditions and embellishes your dinning experience with her delicious creativity. J. Broussard’s strives to produce the very best cuisine from fresh locally available ingredients. Our dessert menu boasts ten different desserts each night, and our daily specials reflect the changing seasons and feature fresh fish flown in from Hawaii and the Gulf Coast. Our sous chef, Joseph Rogers, hand cuts our Black Angus steaks daily.

When Mississippi University for Women was chartered in 1884, it made educational history as the first state-supported college for women in America. Her founding mothers had been persistent and tireless in their efforts, which had spanned over twenty years. Energetic campaigning in the 1860s and 1870s by activist Sallie Reneau had resulted in legislative approval, but no appropriations. A decade later Olivia Valentine Hastings and Annie Coleman Peyton joined forces to lobby legislators and journalists in support of a public women’s college. Originally known as The Industrial Institute and College (II & C), this institution was created by the Mississippi Legislature to provide a unique hybrid: a high quality collegiate education for women coupled with practical vocational training. As one legislator said, it was a “Godsend” for the “poor girls of Mississippi.”

East Mississippi Community College is a public community college serving six counties in East Central Mississippi, offering university-parallel programs, career-technical programs, and workforce programs. The Columbus Main Street Program kicked off on August 9, 1985, at a joint meeting with Downtown Columbus Unlimited. On October 29-31, Columbus hosted a National Main Street Center Resource Team. The program immediately functioned as an arm of the City of Columbus with Paul Coggin as Main Street Manager. From its inception, the Columbus Main Street program worked closely with the downtown merchants association, Downtown Columbus Unlimited with the goal of eventually merging the two programs as a free standing corporation. Paul was, at the same time, instrumental in the founding of the Mississippi Downtown Development Association, which was accomplished in June 1986. It has since changed it's name to Mississippi Main Street Association.
